Project
Review and upgrade of the whole resort — entrance, parking, pathways, gardens, pools and beach — with a stormwater strategy that answers tidal surges.
Our mission was to review and upgrade the whole of the Marriott hotel in terms of its entrance, parking, pathways, gardens, pools, and beach, and to resolve the ingress of tidal waves within part of the resort. We came up with strategies of breaking the waves and filtering coral sand right at the beach itself with appropriate planting techniques and net, and diverting any sea water away from the rooms and into the gardens and out through the parking through a series of natural swales, ponds and artificial beaches within the resort.

Stormwater strategy: prevent accumulation of water, especially during sea surges, in beach-front gardens and prevent water from getting into rooms. Site levels create a series of swales that redirect water away from rooms into a designed low point and a retention pond — the lowest point of the garden — where percolation occurs and excess water flows out towards the back gardens.
Native and coastal plants adapted to the climate and tolerant to salt spray and sea water surges mean minimal damage to landscape. Swales are landscaped as part of the garden rather than hidden as infrastructure.
Instead of fighting against mother nature, we designed a landscape that adapts to it.
